Goose Creek
In 1670 English settlers from Barbados came
to the area. Having quite an independent streak, these settlers wanted
no part of the Charles Towne development. They followed the tributaries
of the Cooper River and found suitable land where they could develop
their plantations. While there are numerous stories of just how the
area came to be known as Goose Creek, the most popular theory refers to
the gooseneck bends in the creek that flows through the area.
Goose Creek encompasses about 50 square
miles located in the heart of Berkeley County. Today 30,000 people call
this town home. Its close proximity to I-26 allows for quick commutes
to just about anywhere in the Lowcountry. The township was actually
incorporated in 1961 and since that time has experienced a great deal
of growth.
One of the largest residential development
projects in the county, Crowfield Plantation, is located in Goose
Creek. It’s a beautiful community centered around a golf course
and lake. Churches, schools and designated recreational areas make
Crowfield very popular with growing families. Thanks to the development
a number of other smaller neighborhood developments have begun to take
shape as well. Yet even with the growth, Goose Creek has been able to
keep a small town feel.
